Dustin Gardner with his parents and Dean ShippDustin J. Gardner was nominated by Dean Melvin D. Shipp to receive The Ohio State University Board of Trustees Student Recognition Award at its September meeting. Dustin is a third-year student in The Ohio State University College of Optometry. Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Dustin did his pre-Optometry studies here at Ohio State. As an undergraduate, Dustin served as an officer in the OSU Pre-Optometry Club and was also active in a number of other student organizations including the OSU Undergraduate Student Government (USG), where he served on the Diversity Committee. He also worked in the Office for Disability Services throughout his undergraduate years, serving in exam facilitation, assisting many students who required a reader or a scribe for their exams, and also serving as the liaison between the Disability Services “Unity” student group and USG.

During his relatively short time in the College of Optometry, Dustin has demonstrated impressive skills in both leadership and service to both the College and to his fellow students. He worked in the dean’s office the summer before his first year in the College, providing valuable service in a variety of capacities. He currently serves as President of the Optometry Student Council and also as the Vice-President of the Class of 2011. Additionally, Dustin serves as student representative on the College Curriculum and Special Events Committees. In these capacities, he has provided valuable input and feedback on a broad range of topics, and he has eloquently communicated the student viewpoint on a number of issues. Dustin also is a member of the Optometry Ambassadors, a College student organization that welcomes and hosts prospective students and Doctor of Optometry program interview candidates. As an Ambassador he has provided exemplary service, volunteering to do weekly College tours on interview days, and coordinating some special hosting events for prospective students.

Each meeting, the Board recognizes two exemplary students from two different colleges, nominated by their respective deans. The students who receive this award may stand out in the academic arena, demonstrate outstanding research in his/her field, promote diversity, and/or excel in civic/university service.
