CINCINNATI EYE INSTITUTE
MISSION:
The Residency in Ocular Disease at the Cincinnati Eye Institute seeks to attract a superior optometric graduate and provide him/her with an advanced clinical and didactic experience in ocular disease diagnosis and treatment. Individuals who complete the program will be qualified to deliver a high level of clinical care in the management of ocular disease, serve as faculty in optometric institutions, and serve the profession through participation in optometric education.
GOALS:
- Improve the resident’s proficiency in the detection and management of ocular disease and ocular signs of systemic disease.
- Provide extensive clinical experience that will promote the development of differential diagnosis, treatment, and case management skills.
- Improve the resident’s ability to care for patients in a pre- and post-surgical time frame.
- Develop the resident’s ability to function as a member of a health care team through participation in an outpatient practice with tertiary eye care providers in the anterior segment, cataract surgery, glaucoma, retina, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, refractive and urgent eye care.
To achieve these goals, the resident will provide patient care, attend lectures and seminars, rotate through sub-specialty clinics, and conduct original research.
The Cincinnati Eye Institute and Outpatient Eye Surgery Center is located on the outskirts of Cincinnati in southwest Ohio. Providing care in nine different sub-specialties of ophthalmology, this new 45,000 square foot facility offers the most modern treatment of medical and surgical eye disorders. Residents will practice in a state-of-the-art facility and will be exposed to a large number of patients (CEI logs 90,000 patients/year) with a variety of ocular and systemic disease.
CURRICULUM:
- Patient Care Activities - the resident will see patients in these specialty services, generally in half-day units.
- Cataract and General Ophthalmology Service
- Glaucoma Service
- Retinal Service
- Neuro-Ophthalmology
- Urgent Care
- Cornea
- Flexible Time - the resident is encouraged to schedule additional rotations in areas of interest (e.g. oculo-plastics)
- Scholarship & Service to Organized Optometry
- Cincinnati Eye Institute hosts quarterly continuing education meetings for area optometrists. The resident is required to participate.
- The resident attends Grand Rounds at the University of Cincinnati. 2 day/week (throughout the academic year).
- The resident will be in charge of a grand rounds continuing education session of the local Ohio Optometric Association zone meeting.
- Although CEI does not have a student extern program with The Ohio State University, 4th year students will rotate to CEI to shadow the resident approximately 1 day/month.
- Research/Case Presentation
The resident is required to present a case presentation at a regional/ national optometric meeting or complete a clinical research project capable of being accepted by an optometric journal. The resident will also present a poster at the East/West Eye Conference in Cleveland (sponsored by the Ohio Optometric Association).
PERIOD:
The duration of the program is 13 months. The resident is assigned 40 hours per week with no on-call duties. The current stipend is $32,000 plus fringe benefits. CEI observes six national holidays, and the resident is permitted to have one week of personal leave and one week of sick leave during the program. The resident is also granted professional leave to attend one professional meeting during the program. CEI provides professional liability protection for the resident.
The resident will receive a certificate certifying completion at the end of the residency. Successful completion of the program requires attendance or excused absences from all clinical assignments, satisfactory diagnoses and treatment plans for all patient encounters, scholarly activity such as a publishable paper or poster and providing CE lectures at CEI and OSU as well as resident evaluations of the program's faculty and curriculum.
STIPEND*:
Established by the Board of the Cincinnati Eye Institute. Currently set at $32,000, plus health insurance and malpractice insurance.

POLICY ON COUNSELING, REMEDIATION AND DISMISSAL OF RESIDENT:
Residents are expected to perform duties and behave in a professional and ethical manner. Performance that deviates from the expected level will result in the following procedural format.
- Resident will be verbally counseled regarding the issue. If the issue is resolved then no further action will be needed.
- If the issue persists, the resident will be put on remediation. This requires monthly follow-up. Each month the issue will be revisited to determine one of the three possible actions as listed below.
- The issue is resolved, no further remediation.
- On-going remediation.
- Termination if a major violation of clinical or ethical behavior.
